For those who have been wondering about American Crime Story: Katrina, yes, it’s still happening—but the idea has been retooled. The limited series was originally scheduled to be the second installment in Ryan Murphy’s crime- focused dramatic anthology. But in June, it was announced that Murphy’s Gianni Versace- focused season would actually air next, with Katrina taking Versace’s place as Season 3. Thankfully for the series, things now appear to be back on track—complete with new source material and a retooled call sheet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy- verse stalwart Sarah Paulson will now be the star of the season. The series originally was to be an adaptation of Douglas Brinkley’s. The Great Deluge, but now, it will be based on Sheri Fink’s. Five Days at Memorial instead. As T. H. R. explains, “Five Days at Memorial explores the aftermath of Katrina at the New Orleans Memorial Medical Center as well as the decision by staff—including Dr. Anna Pou—to euthanize critically ill patients after being trapped in the hospital for days without power. The book explores the attempts to prosecute Pou and two nurses for homicide after an investigation revealed elevated levels of morphine and other drugs in 2.

Paulson would portray Pou, but her other original castmates—including returning actors Courtney B. Vance and Cuba Gooding Jr., as well as newcomers Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, and Dennis Quaid—will have to wait to see if there are parts for them in the re- imagined project. Per T. H. Meanwhile, the other moving parts of Murphy’s ever- expanding TV empire appear to be chugging along as planned: the first nine minutes of The Assassination of Gianni Versace aired for critics at a Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday, and American Horror Story is on the brink of its Season 7 premiere, with Scream Queens star Billie Lourd set to make her series debut. Here’s hoping that this revised version of Katrina adopts a similarly smooth path as it moves forward—and that Quaid and his fellow castmates don’t have to wait by the phone for too long.
